For Architects

We would rather protect your drawings than value-engineer them.

Doty is a Toronto general contractor founded by an architect, built for design-led residential work. If you have a demanding project and a full set, we would like to meet.

Reading the Set

James Doty holds a Bachelor of Architecture, and it shows most in how the company treats a drawing set: as the contract, not as a suggestion. Before we price a project we read every sheet — the wall sections, the millwork pages, the schedules — and we come to the first meeting with questions about the details that matter, not requests to simplify them.

On site, that reading continues. The detail that is going to fail gets raised before it fails, in a phone call or a sketch, while there is still time to resolve it well. RFIs are answered in days, not weeks, because we usually understand why the detail was drawn the way it was — and when we propose an alternative, it is drawn to be equivalent, not cheaper.

How We Work
  1. Open-book pricing

Trades are tendered transparently and the numbers are yours to see. When scope moves, the cost of the move is visible — no black box, no contingency games.

  2. A single point of contact

You deal with James. The founder is on every project, and the roster of trades behind him is a small one, built one project at a time over more than a decade.

  3. Your site meetings, your schedule

Client walk-throughs happen on your schedule and with you in the room. We work as an extension of your office, not as an adversary across the table.

  4. Deliver the house you drew

Our job, in the end, is unglamorous and exact: hold the trades to the specification and hand over the building the architect designed. Nothing less, and nothing else.
